In Chapter 6 you say the Principle of Connection usually trumps the principles of Proximity and similarity, but not Enclosure. Is there a widely accepted ranking of these principles, in the spirit of Cleveland's Hierarchy? I made a start on such a ranking below, but I'd rather not conduct a personal program of experiments if the literature already contains a well-regarded answer. 1 Enclosure 2 Connection 3 Proximity 3 Similarity ? Closure ? Continuity

I suspect that someone has researched this and produced a hierarchy, but I'm not aware of the work offhand. My statement that connectedness trumps proximity and similarity was derived from Colin Ware's work, especially his book Information Visualization: Perception for Design. My statement that connection does not trump enclosure is based on my own observation, rather than experimental research. __________________ Stephen Few |
