The way you displayed the assignments is superior to all of the other examples!  I like the letter grade hiding behind the color gradients.  You could have left missing assignments missing since the hole will stand out on its own.  I suppose it depends on how important missing assignments are.

Yes, I agree with your last sentence. I assumed that a missing assignment represented a situation to be addressed, whether or not the student would be allowed to make it up. I opted for the orange square in order to ensure that a missing assignment would stand out against a field of As as well as it does against Ds and Fs.
