I've seen these before but didn't know they had a name.  An example can be found on page 3 of this link: http://www.lcmp.eng.cam.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/T2-Report-web.pdf.

It's an interesting way to show (in this case) material flow.  I'd prefer to see it all done in percent ratios where the left side (inputs) adds up to 100.  It would allow easier comprehension. 

Is this the best way to tell this story? 
How could the story telling be improved?
