Kris, thanks for pointing to that example of the non-connected scatterplot. I agree with you that connecting the dots wouldn't add much here. However, I also like the line graph from the article that shows the same data. The scatterplot is well-annotated, but if you were to add similar annotations to the line graph the point would be just as clear, and the whole thing would require less work to figure out how to read it.

Jeff,

Thank you for that great example!  You are correct, adding the annotation on the line chart is a more - fair comparison of scatter vs line.   I agree that it is more clear. The double-line chart is better is simply better than the scatterplot of years.
