I enjoy a challenge, so using Excel I drew the kind of horizontal and vertical box plots you wanted, with a light shaded acceptable zone behind the actual box features. The trick is to put the acceptable zone series on the primary axis and the box and whisker series on the secondary. In addition to my usual set of series, I added a thin box for median to produce a thin white line between second and third quartiles.

The zip file at this address contains the Excel workbook with the example, with some degree of step-by-step documentation. Any questions, don't hesitate to email.

Ahhhaa! Of course. Now I see it. Once a true master shows you how it's done it is so obvious. :-)
Thanks!
